Tennis, an area where India keeps big hopes commences today with Rohan Bopanna in action for the singles tie at 10 am. Leander Paes and Sania Mirza would team up for the mixed doubles event later in the day. In women's hockey India takes on a strong Scotland squad in their first pool match.
New Delhi: India were off to a perfect start in the tennis event of Commonwealth Games with Rohan Bopanna demolishing Robert Buyinza of Uganda in straight sets in the men's singles event here today. Bopanna was too good for a player, who has just one ranking point in the ATP charts, as he completed a 6-1 6-4 win in just one hour and two minutes in the first round.
The tall Karnataka-lad is scheduled to play a second match today when he pairs up with Nirupama Sanjeev against top seeded Australians Paul Hanley and Rodionova Anastasia. In swimming India made good progress with the team reaching finals of relay event.
Eight medals would be decided on the opening day. India is placing high expectations on the two medals from weightlifting as Soniya Chanu is rated as a medal prospect in women's 48 kg category. Sukhen Dev would be keeping the host nations hopes high in the men's 56 kg section. Swimming pools got active early, with Australia leading the race.
